Candles

He could light a hundred candles,

Turn ten spotlights upon himself

None would be enough to eradicate the shadows

Of the cards that he has dealt.

He could shuffle the pack countless times,

Still nothing would be changed.

For whichever way those cards would fall,

The facts of his choices still remain.

The threat of his undoing

Would still hang above his head,

Would still be evident in the invisible stains

Left

Upon

His

Bed.

No matter how much he tries to forget,

No matter how much he tries to deny,

One day he’ll learn the hard way -

Karma always takes an eye for an eye.

It’s only a matter of time.

A matter of others not holding their tongues.

A matter of one deciding enough is enough

And his entire world then comes undone.

No-one can stop the sun’s light

Reflecting off the moon.

Just as he cannot hide behind

The door of his black room.

There is proof.

Trails of every action he took.

Enough words to write a trilogy

Enough images to fill a picture book.

He could go a thousand miles

Thinking he outran accountability.

But every mask crumbles

Every truth is revealed

Eventually.

There is no darkness black enough

That’s able to hide deceit,

As those like him always learn

When their life is burnt to the ashes

Lying around their feet.

Let him light a hundred candles

Thinking his lies all went unseen,

Because even in the flames’ light

He didn’t realise that’s not what

Held tongues mean.

Let him light a thousand candles

Hold his hands out to their warmth.

Rubbing his stained palms together in glee

As he forgets that he was warned.

Let him light a hundred candles

Thinking they negate the dark.

There’ll come a time he’s forced to remember

The most destructive explosions begin

With the smallest spark.

Let him light a hundred candles

Trying to eliminate the shadows of the cards he dealt.

Let him sit, not feeling the burning wax upon his skin

As

It

Continues

To

Melt.
